# Smart Paste for Text: Fill Rows and Grow Lists Automatically

> Paste several lines into a text row in the Selection view: they fill that row and the rows below it, and lines that do not fit create new elements in your design.

## Goal

Fill a list, a table or a row of cards from a block of text in one paste, and let Contently add the missing elements instead of dropping lines.

## Before you start

- A selection with text layers, for example a list, a table or a row of cards.
- Several lines of text to paste, one value per line (from a spreadsheet, a document or a notes app).

## Steps

1. **Select the layout** Select the list or the cards in Figma. Their text layers appear in the Selection view as groups of rows, for example one group of names and one of ages next to an image group.

2. **Paste the lines into the first row** Click the row that should receive the first line, then paste (Ctrl or Cmd + V). Each line goes to its own row, starting at the row you clicked and continuing downwards. Blank lines are skipped and spaces around a line are trimmed. A single line without a line break pastes as normal text into that row only.
3. **Let Contently add what is missing** When there are more lines than rows from your row to the end of the group, Contently shows '3 lines couldn't fit. Creating new elements…' and adds elements for the rest. Nothing is dropped. A card or list item is copied as a whole (a component instance, or the row inside a component slot); loose text layers are copied with their styling and placed after the last one in the direction the layout already runs.

4. **Check the new elements** The new rows appear in the Selection view and in the design. If the layer name ends in a space and a number (Name 01), the copies continue the count (Name 02, Name 03); a name without a number stays as it is. When a card holds several text layers you pasted into, such as a code and a name, a new card takes one line for each of them, so every card is filled completely.
5. **Move text between groups with Copy content** The Copy content button on a text group's header copies its lines to Contently's clipboard and to your system clipboard. The button then reads Paste content, with a clear button beside it. Pasting from there fills a group the same way, including new elements for lines that do not fit. Once something is copied, hovering a row also shows a small paste button for the same content.

## Tips

- Click the first row before pasting a whole list, so no row is left out.
- The empty lines of a copied table or document are skipped, so you can paste text as it is.

## Result

Every pasted line has a place: the existing rows are filled in order and the layout grows by the elements it was missing.

## If something goes wrong

- **Only one row changed.** -> A paste without a line break replaces only the row you clicked. Paste text with one value per line.
- **Rows above the one I clicked stayed the same.** -> Filling starts at the clicked row and runs downwards. Click the first row of the group to fill all of it.
- **A message says 'Nothing copied yet'.** -> Use Copy content on a group first. The cache lasts while the plugin is open and is gone when you reload it.

## Common questions

### Does Smart Paste use AI?

No. It splits the text into lines, fills rows in order and copies elements; it does not call an AI provider.

### Are lines lost when there are too few rows?

No. Lines that do not fit create new elements, so every line ends up in the design.

### How long does Copy content keep the text?

For as long as the plugin stays open. It is not saved between sessions.
