Drag & Drop Content: Swap Text, Images and Instances Between Layers
Drag a row by its ⋮⋮ handle in the Selection view and drop it on another row of the same kind to swap their content.
Goal
Rearrange the content of cards, avatars or list items in your design by swapping it between layers, without copying and pasting.
Before you start
- Layers selected on the canvas, so they appear in the Selection view (for example a row of cards).
Steps
-
Select the cards or layers Select all the cards on the canvas. Their texts, images and instances appear in the Selection view, grouped by element type (or by layer name if you change the grouping).

Select all avatar cards, then drag a row by its ⋮⋮ handle in the Contently panel to swap content. - Grab the row Every row has a ⋮⋮ handle (tooltip: Drag to swap or reorder content). Press on the row and drag it. Buttons and fields inside a row do not start a drag.
- Drop on another row to swap Drop it on another row of the same kind. The two layers swap their content in Figma: the name and age of two avatar cards trade places, or two images exchange.
- Text rows show an insert line at their edges Dropping on the top or bottom edge of a text row shows an insert line, but the result is the same swap: the dragged text and the target's text trade places, and no other row moves. Images and instances swap the same way.
Tips
- To trade a whole card's content, select the cards first and drag the rows of one group onto another.
- Use Restore Original in the group menu to go back to the content you started with.
Result
The content of two layers is swapped in the design, with no copy and paste.
If something goes wrong
- The drop does nothing. A row can only be dropped on a row of the same kind: text on text, an image on an image, an instance on an instance.
- The row will not move when I press a button on it. Press on an empty part of the row or on the ⋮⋮ handle, not on a button or field.
Common questions
Does dragging change the layer order on the canvas?
No. The layers stay where they are; their content moves between them.
Can I drag between different kinds, such as an image onto a text?
No. Rows only react to rows of the same kind.
