Quick Actions: Run Contently from Figma's Command Palette

Randomize, select, refine, rename, rewrite and apply templates from Cmd+/ without opening the plugin window, and open its tools directly.

  • [selection]
  • [ai]
  • [designer]

Goal

Do the common Contently jobs in one keystroke and a few words, and know what each command needs and answers.

Before you start

  • Contently installed in Figma.
  • A selection for every command that changes layers.
  • An AI provider set up for the AI commands (an API key, or a local model for the commands that allow it).

Steps

  1. Open Figma's Quick Actions Press Cmd + / (Ctrl + / on Windows) and type Contently or the name of a command. Contently lists its commands with an icon in front; the ones with options ask for them in the palette, so the plugin window stays closed.
  2. Select first Select the layers the command should work on. Every command that changes layers stops with a short message when nothing fits, for example 'Select at least one element to randomize.' or 'Select a frame or group first, then I can name its layers.'
  3. Change or find layers 🎲 Randomize selection asks for a Randomize mode: Randomize all, Randomize properties or Apply templates. 🔍 Auto-select similar asks for a Mode (Layer names, Content matches, Style matches, Fill matches or Component states) and a Scope (Same level, Top-level container, Section / component or Entire page). 🔎 Refine selection asks for a text to search and an Element type. It searches your selection and everything inside it, and selects the matches; if nothing matches, the selection stays as it is. Leave Element type on All types: in this version the other choices find nothing.
  4. Apply a template 📝 Use template… asks for a template; start typing its name to see suggestions. It applies a text or image template to the selection and answers 'Applied "Name" to N element(s).' Other kinds of template are refused with a message.
  5. Let AI write, draw or name ✏️ UX writing (AI) rewrites the selected text layers in place; a prompt is optional. 🪄 Generate image with AI needs a prompt: with nothing selected it creates a new image, with layers selected it fills them. 🏷️ Name layers (AI) asks for a Naming standard (Design System, Slash Paths, BEM or Code Names) and optional guidance. 💬 AI feedback (headless) draws a feedback frame on the canvas, with an optional prompt. Generate image with AI always ends with 'Image generation complete.', even when the picture could not be made, so look at the canvas.
  6. Open a tool Open Contently opens the plugin window. 📁 Open templates manager opens the templates and puts the cursor in their search. 🧰 Open selection tools opens the Smart Selection sheet. 🖼️ Open image tools opens the Selection view with Menu → Compress Images open and the size field focused. These three answer 'Opening Contently…' and leave the plugin open; they also show as buttons when you select a layer.
  7. Read the answer A command finishes with a Figma message and closes the plugin: 'Randomized N element(s).', 'Auto selection complete (N element(s)).', 'Refined to N element(s).', 'Updated UX copy on N text layer(s).', 'Renamed N layer(s) with <the standard you chose> names' or 'Rendered AI feedback to the canvas.' The Open commands are the exception, as above.

Tips

  • Open Auto-select similar's Configure in UI… entry when the palette's modes are not enough: it opens the Smart Selection sheet.
  • Layers inside a component instance cannot be renamed from outside. The headless message tells you to select the component and run the command again.

Result

The change is made, or the message says why not, without the plugin window opening.

If something goes wrong

  • A message asks for a selection. Select the layers first and run the command again. Randomize, Auto-select, Refine, UX writing, Name layers, AI feedback and Use template each name what they need.
  • 'Provide a prompt to generate an image.' Generate image with AI needs a prompt. Type what the picture should show.
  • 'Template "X" not found.' or 'Choose a template to apply.' Pick a template from the suggestions while you type its name. Only text and image templates can be applied this way.
  • 'You've used up today's free AI uses.' The AI commands share the free plan's 12 AI actions per day with everything else in Contently. They are back the next day, or a paid upgrade removes the limit.
  • 'Those layer names already read well, so nothing changed.' Name layers found nothing to improve. Try another Naming standard, or add guidance.
  • Refine selection says 'No elements match the criteria.' although the text is there. Set Element type to All types. In this version a specific type finds nothing.

Common questions

Do Quick Actions use the same AI as the plugin window?

Yes. They use the provider you set in AI Settings, and they count towards the same daily limit.

Why do some commands show their options in the palette?

They are parameter commands: Figma asks for each option in the palette and runs the command when you confirm, so the plugin window does not open.

Where is Quick Actions' answer shown?

As a Figma message at the bottom of the canvas. Most commands close the plugin with the same message.
