The Auto Layout way

No plugin needed. Good for a handful of cards, slow once the content changes.

  1. Draw a frame and give it horizontal Auto Layout. Its gap is the space between your columns.
  2. Inside it, add one frame per column with vertical Auto Layout. Their gap is the space between cards.
  3. Set every column to Fill container, so the columns share the width.
  4. Drag each card into whichever column looks shortest.

The catch: Auto Layout doesn't know which column is shortest. Add, remove or resize a card and you balance them all over again.

Illustration: one horizontal Auto Layout frame, three vertical Auto Layout columns, cards balanced by hand.

The one-click way

Your grid stays balanced however uneven the cards are: Masonry measures each one and drops it into the shortest column.

  1. Open Masonry from Figma Community.
  2. Select a frame with your cards, or the cards themselves.
  3. Leave Auto columns on or set your own count, then choose the gap.
  4. Click Apply Layout. Changed a card? Click Apply Masonry Grid in the right panel and the grid balances again.

Masonry grids in Figma: common questions

Can Auto Layout make a masonry grid?
Not on its own. Wrapping Auto Layout fills rows, so a short card leaves a gap under it. Nest vertical Auto Layout columns inside a horizontal frame instead, and balance the columns by hand.
Can Figma's grid layout make a masonry grid?
Only if you set the row sizes by hand, because Figma's grid layout places items on rows and columns. Masonry can do that for you: switch on Use Figma grid layout (a Supporter option).
Is Masonry free?
Yes. Masonry is free to use, with a set number of layouts every day. Pro removes the daily limit.
How many columns does Masonry use?
With Auto columns on, Masonry works out the count from your frame's width. Switch it off to set your own.
Can I change the order of the cards?
Yes. Drag cards around in the preview, even from one column to another. Apply keeps the order you set.
Does Masonry replace Auto Layout?
No. Masonry is for arranging and exploring layouts. Where your design needs to resize, use Auto Layout.
