Why the background disappears
MP4 drops the see-through. ProRes keeps it.
H.264, the codec inside almost every MP4, has no alpha channel. Two files made from the same sticker: one opens in DaVinci with its background clear, one does not. This tool writes the first kind.
| File | Codec | Pixel format | Transparency |
|---|---|---|---|
| Recorded in a browser, fails in DaVinci | H.264 | yuv420p | None |
| Encoded with ffmpeg, opens in DaVinci | ProRes 4444 | yuva444p12le | Kept |
| This tool, for editors | ProRes 4444 | yuva444p12le | Kept |
Three places, three files
Say where it goes. The codec follows.
-
Edit in DaVinci, Premiere or Final Cut
ProRes 4444 MOV. Every frame stored whole, with its alpha. Opens on macOS and Windows.
Sample sticker: 11.7 MB
-
Overlay on a website or in OBS
WebM with alpha. Plays in Chrome, Edge, Firefox and OBS media sources, see-through included.
Sample sticker: 618 KB
-
Post or send it
MP4 on a background you pick. Chats and social apps cannot show transparency, so you choose the color behind it.
Sample sticker: 143 KB
All three keep the sticker's own frame timing and resample it to the frame rate you pick, so a 3 second loop stays 3 seconds.
In Figma
Animating the sticker in Figma?
Optimizely turns a few frames, or a prototype flow, into a GIF, WebP, APNG or WebM, with transitions. Export the APNG, drop it here and get a ProRes file your editor keeps see-through.
